Sleep Health Europe calls for sleep to be embedded in EU cardiovascular health checks
By: Sleep Health Europe
On 18 May 2026, Sleep Health Europe submitted a formal response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the forthcoming Council Recommendation on health checks for cardiovascular diseases, a flagship initiative of the EU Cardiovascular Health Plan known as the Safe Hearts Plan.
The Recommendation will shape how Member States are advised to screen for cardiovascular risk in primary care over the coming years. The European Commission has already recognised obstructive sleep apnoea as a cardiovascular risk factor warranting inclusion in the screening scope. Sleep Health Europe’s submission sets out five recommendations to give that recognition operational substance, ensuring that sleep is embedded into the EU Protocol on Health Checks alongside blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, and body mass index.
The submission was validated by Sleep Health Europe’s editorial board and reflects the position of our coalition partners. The full text can be found by downloading the full document below.
